Summer Hair Care Tips

We’re all well aware of the damage that the sun and heat can cause to the skin, but many of us tend to forget that these can also wreak havoc on our hair, causing it to dry out and lose its natural shine. To help you avoid that damage, we’ve gathered some expert tips that will help you keep your hair healthy and vibrant throughout the summer.

We’re all well aware of the damage that the sun and heat can cause to the skin, but many of us tend to forget that these can also wreak havoc on our hair, causing it to dry out and lose its natural shine. To help you avoid that damage, we’ve gathered some expert tips that will help you keep your hair healthy and vibrant throughout the summer:

1. Cover Up

One of the simplest, safest ways to protect your hair and avoid sun damage, is simply to cover it up with a hat or a scarf that will provide protection from harmful UV rays and help keep your hair and scalp’s natural moisture from evaporating.

2. Place hair in a comfortable and loose bun or pony-tail

During the summer, due to the heat, we tend to wear our hair up more often and for longer periods of time. On the one hand, this is a great solution that can also help protect your hair, thanks to the minimized exposure. However, wearing a tight bun or pony-tail, can damage the hair and the scalp. So if you choose to pull it up, make sure to do it in a gentle, loose style that doesn’t cause pulling and leaves your scalp some breathing room.

3. Easy on the Shampoo

In the summer we also tend to shower more frequently, which, in turn, causes us to wash our hair more often. While it is important to wash our hair on a regular basis, you should keep in mind that washing it too often can be harmful as the shampoo can wash away the natural protective oils that keep our hair healthy and shiny. So try to keep the shampooing down and stick to a simple rinse instead.

4. The Right Shampoo

When you wash your hair, it’s important to choose a natural based shampoo that contains healthy ingredients. Our Herbal Shampoo, for example, contains medicinal herbs that nourish the hair from the roots to the tips.

6. Go Natural

Since your hair is already exposed to a great deal of heat in the summer, it is recommended to go easy on the electric hair dryers and styling irons. Instead, opt for a natural air dry and use styling products to create the look you want.

6. DIY Beach Style

One great natural summer look is the soft wavy beach look, which you can easily achieve with this simple homemade spray:
Just mix 1 tablespoon sea salt with 1 tablespoon coconut oil and some water in a little spray bottle. Shake and spray on your hair, then scrunch it up a bit to create that wavy beach look.

7. Un-Frizz

If your hair tends to frizz, summer can be a tough time to keep it shiny and straight, especially if you live in a humid area. One great all natural solution is to use a tiny bit of coconut oil or Shea butter, which will help tame the frizz and keep your hair looking shiny and healthy.

8. Hair Protection

The damage from the sun and heat, as well as from spending time in the pool and / or in the sea, often causes our hair to dry out and look more and more worn and lackluster throughout the summer. To help keep it protected from the elements you can use our natural based Hair Serum, that is made with linseed oil and helps keep the vitamins and natural oils intact.

9. Sun Screen

When it comes to the sun, you can actually use the same sunscreen on your hair that you do for your face and body. When you’re done covering your skin, use the extra bit that’s left on your hand by rubbing it through your hair.

10. Weekly Honey Treatment

To give your hair that extra moisturizing boost, you can use this simple, natural DIY honey mask – mix 1 tablespoon of honey with a 1 liter of warm water, rub into your hair and leave on for an hour. Then rinse.

11. Deep Oil Wash

Another great way to increase the moisture in your hair is by adding oil to your washing routine from time to time – after shampooing, rub in some olive or almond oil, massage it in from scalp to tip, and then wash off and condition. Your hair will look and feel great!

12. Oil is the New Conditioner

Conditioners can help keep your hair soft and shiny in the short term, but since they condition the roots as well, they can end up causing your hair to weaken and lose its fullness. Therefore, instead of using conditioner, you can use a conditioning oil, such as our Lituph Nourishing Hair Oil, which is made with medicinal herbs and helps strengthen your hair and keep it soft and shiny.

13. DIY Spritz

A moisturizing spritz can be very useful to keep your hair looking shiny and fresh. You can save some cash by making your own with this simple recipe:

¼ cup distilled water, 1 tbsp. Aloe Water, 1 tbsp. coconut or almond oil, 1 tbsp. vitamin E, 2-3 drops of Lavender etheric oil, and a spray bottle.

Start with the water, then add all the other ingredients, and shake well to mix. Keep the spray in the fridge for up to 5 days.

14. Go for the Comb

Hairbrushes tend to pull your hair, which causes is to break and lose its natural protective coat. Therefore, it is better to opt for a wide tooth comb, which will help keep your hair untangled without causing harm.
